The Bill Vinten GTC University Awards

Now in their fourth year, the GTC is once again offering the Bill Vinten GTC University Awards to encourage excellent teaching of camerawork skills within UK educational establishments. These awards came about as the result of a collaboration between the GTC and Bill Vinten, one of Guild's most long-standing supprters and sponsors.

Bill Vinten said:

"The Guild is an effective organisation and respected upholder of camera craft skills and I hope that this award will allow a new generation of cameramen to appreciate and benefit from the craft and creative skills of Guild members."

The awards are funded by a charitable trust generously set up by Bill Vinten and focus on providing funding for work experience for potential new entrants to the industry.

The Bill Vinten GTC University Awards include:

  • a prestigious trophy
  • paid work experience for the winning graduate and two runners-up
  • a year's membership of the GTC.

The Bill Vinten GTC University Award invites any single faculty, college or university located in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to submit a single portfolio containing three complete films. Each of the films in the portfolio must include a specific camera credit for a student, who must be, or have been, a final-year student during the period July 2015 to May 2016. See the rules for applying.

  • The winning faculty, college or university will be awarded the Bill Vinten University Trophy.
  • The winning camerawoman or cameraman will receive work experience, paid with expenses, equivalent to £2500.00, plus 1 year's associate membership of the GTC.
  • Two runners-up will receive work experience, paid with expenses, equivalent to £750.00 each, plus 1 year's associate membership of the GTC.

With high fees and unease about media-type degrees, potential students are becoming more and more discerning about their choice of university; the Bill Vinten GTC University Trophy represents a prestigious mark of quality and useful recruiting tool for the winning faculty, college or university.

Winning students find the paid work experience provided by professional cameramen and camerawomen invaluable, while any GTC member who volunteers to arrange the work experience will know that they are employing the very best of the future generation of camerawomen or cameramen.

Oliver Hadlow-Martin,who enjoyed a prize of work experience with one of the country's top documentary cameramen, GTC member Jonathan Young, says "I learnt a lot from watching Jonathan work; he knows his craft so well! In such a difficult job market I think it’s great that you have provided people like me and other students the opportunity to learn and expand our CVs for the better."
